On her last leg

Well, folks, this is it. One more day and I’m done. It doesn’t quite feel real. I’m sure when I arrive at Federation Square and see all those smiling faces, it will sink in.

Honestly, it has been a real privilege to be able to undertake this journey. I had the time and the money to seek the fulfillment of a dream. I am a very lucky lady.

I suspect I’m a better person now, but exactly how I’ve changed isn’t easy to quantify. I’m more comfortable with myself, more self-assured. I have had an insight into what I’m capable of both physically and mentally. I’m actually a pretty tough cookie when it counts. I’m more open. I see people as people now, not their race, country or religion, or any of the peripheral stuff that seems to confuse some people. Am I whole? Has this journey “completed” me in some way? The short answer is “No”, I am a work in progress, as we all are.

So, what’s next? I’m not entirely sure. It will take time to settle into the rhythm of ‘normal’ life. It’s likely to be a rocky adjustment, not least because there’s a good chance that I’ll feel like I’ve been shut in a cage. Although I have been craving some stability, a proper bed, and indoor plumbing; so certain aspects will be easy to adjust to. I will continue to fundraise for the Cancer Council, and will hopefully meet my $50k target. I’m going to write a book about the adventure, and hopefully get it published. This will be a first for me, and the learning curve will be a steep one, but I’m excited about it. Life post-adventure is going to be busy, particularly if paid employment is thrown into the mix (but let’s not do anything rash, ok).

Tarquin and Patsy are doing well. They are looking into getting their own place when we get back, we just need to determine if chickens are legally allowed to sign a lease or own property. I suspect we will hear an announcement shortly and the ringing of church bells, but I don’t want to jinx it.

I hope this post finds you well, feeling like your dreams can be achieved, an planning a little outing to Federation Square on Sunday (11:00am).

  1. Your journey ranks exceedingly high on the totally remarkable scale. Am a bit sad you are transitioning…..With huge respect peace dk

  2. Congrats Jane on an awesome achievement, sorry we couldn’t be in the city to welcome you back. Enjoy life off the road for a while. Regards

  3. A fantastic performance and a great experience-thanks for sharing the journey. Base Camp Operations Officer made a few blues of omission along the way but the Field Operative pedaled on regardless to the end. The finish at Federation Square and the ABC 774 Conversation Hour put the icing on the cake and we look forward to the “cutting” of the cake as The Book comes together – there will be lot of work editing all those photos and putting the story together. The fundraising has been very rewarding for cancer research so WELL DONE, Janey!

  4. Hope you made it in! It’s hard for me to fathom exactly what you’ve been able to do. Wish you and your efforts to raise awareness of melanoma the best! Cheers! From Dali!
